Path issues with Mac+Screen.

In Mac OSX Leopard, there's a feature where files places in /etc/paths.d/ will have their contents appended to $PATH. But GNU screen doesn't pick up on it, which causes problems for things like git that use it to put their odd installation location in the path.

So, I put something in my .bashrc to manually add them to $PATH. My bashrc is shared across all my machines, so I only do it if the shell is in a screen session and on a Mac:

# On mac, there are files in /etc/paths.d/ that contain more paths. Add them manually for screen's benefit.
if [[ $IN_SCREEN && $(uname) == 'Darwin' ]]; then
 export PATH=$PATH:$(cat /etc/paths.d/* | tr \n : | sed 's/:\s*$//')
fi

In my .screenrc I set $IN_SCREEN for situations like this:

setenv IN_SCREEN "yes"

Leaving San Francisco for New York.

Last Wednesday I resigned from my position at VMware with a two week
notice, and gave my roommates a 30 day notice. I'll be moving to New
York in a month. San Francisco has been fun, but I need to be in NY. I
don't have a job lined up, so I'll be looking once I get there. If you
know of anything, or know anyone that I should meet, let me know.

My plant looked cold, so I made him a sweater.

Pretty sharp for a plant, isn't he? I can't think of a good name for
him, though.

On the drive back from VT, there was a huge snow storm. What should have been a 4 hour drive turne into 8 hours. The next morning, NY was covered in snow, in a way that it hasn't been in a long time.

Of broken dreams and remembered skills

Browsing around Imagine Knit in Castro, I knocked over a mannequin and broke a ceramic part of it. I felt very bad about it, so I bought a bunch of yarn, needles, and patters for some ties and socks.

It still didn't feel like enough, so I straightened up and re-alphabetized one of their bookshelves. That's right, I shelf-read at a knitting store. Who knew I'd actually use skills from working at the RIT Library.
